Announcement of the "Onbe Festival," the only unique festival of its kind in Japan.

[Onbe Festival, the only unique festival of its kind in Japan, is being held!]

The character for "ayu" (sweetfish) is written with the radical for fish and the character for "divination".

The Onbe Festival, the only ayu (sweetfish) fortune-telling ritual in Japan, will be held in Takihara, Taiki Town.

After the festival at Mito Shrine, the ayu (sweetfish) that have been purified are thrown into a rock cave called "Ohachi" in Otaki Gorge, and whether or not they go in is used to predict one's fortune for the year.

It is a historical Shinto ritual whose origins are said to date back to the 4th century, during the reign of Emperor Chuai, the 14th emperor.

Please come and see the traditional events that have been passed down in the naturally beautiful Otaki Gorge.

Date and time: August 30, 2020 (Sunday) 10:00~
