About the Grand Shrine's Shikinen Sengu Ceremony
Once every 20 years, the shrine building, costumes, and sacred treasures are renewed.
"Japan's largest Shinto ritual" praying to Amaterasu Omikami
Both the Inner Shrine and the Outer Shrine have grounds of equal size on the east and west sides, and the Shikinen Sengu, Japan's largest festival, involves changing the shrine grounds every 20 years, replacing everything, including the shrine buildings, costumes, and sacred treasures, in accordance with ancient tradition, and then moving the Great Deity to the New Shrine.
The Shikinen Sengu, which has been held for 1300 years, has great significance in that the shrine building is rebuilt every 20 years to remain fresh and unchanging, and the festival is held in the same traditional style. In 25, the 62nd Shikinen Sengu was held.

The Shikinen Sengu ceremony will also begin at Takihara Shrine, a branch shrine of the Imperial Grand Shrine of Ise, located here in Taiki Town, in 8.

Grand Shrine Shikinen Sengu Takihara Shrine Tree Pulling Ceremony
In preparation for the Shikinen Sengu (yearly rebuilding of the shrine) in 2024, a folk event called "Okihiki" will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in which local residents carry timber to be used for rebuilding the shrine.
On Monday, November 10th, 2025, the "63rd Grand Shrine Shikinen Sengu Takihara Shrine Tree Pulling Ceremony" was held, and preparations are currently underway for April 12th.
On the day, the timber for the ceremony will be loaded onto sacred carts from the Misegawa and Chojano districts of Takihara, Taiki Town, and transported to Takihara Shrine.
Even people from outside the town can participate in the "Mikihiki Ceremony," in which the entire community comes together to offer their services, as special Shinryo citizens.
